New Advents for Old Maladies

This year has marked the approval by the FDA of a number of phenomenal drugs that promise revolutionary modes of treatment for a host of old problems veterinarians are frequently asked to resolve.  We want to bring some of these new treatments to light for those clients that continue to deal with issues that up to now veterinarians just didn’t have a good answer.

·         Slentrol, by Pfizer:  Slentrol is a unique product that inhibits MTP, or Microsomal Triglyceride Transfer Protein, and effectively quells that which stimulates the appetite.  It is not a panacea for weight loss, but has proven extremely efficacious in the suppression of that “starving” feeling (an appetite suppressant) when a dog is losing weight when put on a doctor/veterinarian supervised diet and exercise program.  In a relatively short time we have seen dogs lose as much as 25% of their body weight in as little as 3 months, and are now more active and playful, and now enjoy a reduced risk of type II Diabetes, arthritis from carrying extra weight, and if the more “slender” state can be maintained, most assuredly a longer, healthier life!

·         Reconcile, by Lilly:  Reconcile is designed to assist Behavioral Modification Programs (BMP) for the treatment of Separation Anxiety, as well as several other anxiety disorders.  It is highly effective and an 8 week course of therapy is recommended combined with a BMP.  The studies have shown 73% of patients respond and discontinue their destructive ways when left alone at home.  This is not a cure-all, and it MUST be accompanied by a BMP!  But now there is more hope than ever for treating an age-old problem to which we have not had a better therapy.  Call the Hebron Animal Hospital to make an appointment to determine if your pet has Separation Anxiety, and if Reconcile is right for your pet.

·         Comfortis, by Lilly:  Comfortis is a revolutionary oral chewable tablet that is designed to kill fleas on dogs for 30 days, and has the unique ability to kill fleas within minutes of the flea jumping on a dog, unlike ALL the current topicals available on the market today, AND it kills fleas BEFORE they can even lay a single egg!  It is currently only available for dogs.  No longer do we need to mess with liquids that get on us or our children, furnishings, etc., and it is okay to bathe your dog or let him/her swim as often as they wish without risk of diluting or washing off the topical products.  The active ingredient is a completely natural occurring byproduct of a fermentation process, and is completely harmless to your dog and is biodegradable.  Comfortis, however, does not make a claim of efficacy against ticks, mosquitoes, or any intestinal parasites.  Look for this revolutionary product in the Spring at the Hebron Animal Hospital.

·         Cerenia, by Pfizer:  Research has shown that as much as 17% of dogs experience motion sickness when traveling by automobile even the shortest of distances.  Up until now a veterinarian’s only effective means of controlling motion sickness was the administration of low doses of a major tranquilizer, Acepromazine.  Cerenia is a brand new drug, proven to be extremely safe, and can be given once a day on an empty stomach 2 hours before traveling to prevent vomiting associated with motion sickness, WITHOUT any sedation whatsoever!  If your dog suffers from motion sickness and the only reason your dog does not get to be with the family during the popular holiday travel season, then give the Hebron Animal Hospital a call to see what you can do for your dog to prevent motion sickness!
